Introducing our latest design Robins Egg
We are so excited to be able to share with you our latest woven design Robins Egg, which is available in four exciting colourways: Riley, Basil, Mulberry and Nutmeg!
We’ve long been huge admirers of British artist Bridget Riley (b.1931),whose geometric patterns have a disorientating effect on the eye and produce movement in colour. Robins Egg is very much a nod to her iconic Op Art period.
For us the design started with a simple exploration of shape - specifically of squares and circles. By arranging them in a grid formation, we wanted to see how the two separate layers interacted when placed on top of one another. We then experimented with layering the shapes in different coloured tissue papers and loved how the overlapping of colours naturally introduced a third colour to the pallet.
For us the design really came to life after we printed the two checkerboard grids onto a velum paper - we particularly enjoyed the tension and movement that was created when the two layers were displaced on top of each other. The result, an intricate eye catching moiré pattern!
At the beginning we’d considered Robins Egg as a screen printed linen, but after talking with our wonderful weavers about how the intricacies of the design would translate into weave, it seemed a no-brainer to develop the design into a jacquard.
We wanted to get some extra detail into the individual overlapping squares and circles so added in a diagonal twill detail which was picked up in a contrast coloured warp yarn. We know the design wasn’t all that easy to develop and as a consequence trialled numerous samples until we felt we’d achieved the desired construction.
We are so glad we persevered as we are truly delighted with how it has turned out!
Picking colourways for a design is always fun! We do have to really rain ourselves in though and be very selective on what we decide to go with. There must’ve been at least x12 different colourways we could’ve chosen. We do feel like we settled on four really diverse options, that also happen to compliment our other woven designs.
Mulberry happens to be Alex’s favourite colourway and Nutmeg is Virginia’s. What’s your favourite?
And finally, we were so lucky to get to preview the design in last Octobers “New Collections” in The World of Interiors magazine - the first time for us seeing the design in a large expanse!
