Sofia was designed by Alexandra Palmowski, a graphic artist based in Manchester with a brilliant sense of 3D geometrics. I was attracted to Alexandra’s style as it is reminiscent of the forerunner of Op Art Bridget Riley (1931-), whose geometric patterns have a disorientating effect on the eye and produce movement in colour. The pointillist style in this design harks back to the French post-Impressionist artist Seurat, with the little dots creating a sense of flux in the most subtle way. The powerful design is toned down by printing it in delicate, mostly pastel tones.
